Trieste’s Scorpion Gallery was renowned for its exhibition programme, orientated towards contemporary art. It was directed by Frida de Tuoni throughout its period of activity that lasted from 1946 to 1952. Jože Cesar, Avgust Černigoj, Bogdan Grom, Robert Hlavaty, Avrelij Lukežič, Rudolf Saksida and Lojze Spacal were Slovenian artists originating from the Trieste area that regularly exhibited at the Scorpion Gallery. Apart from them, authors from continental Slovenia as well as Italians and foreign artists were also regularly represented there by their exhibited works. The collaboration of the gallery and these Slovenian artists was made possible by The Slovene-Croatian Educational and Cultural Association’s Subsection for the Fine Arts. The Subsection’s task was to promote Slovenian culture in the area of the Free Territory of Trieste in order to prove that this area of unsolved territorial issues was inhabited by Slovenians and that they were also culturally active. Various media from the Trieste area substantially reported on the exhibitions that were held at the Scorpion Gallery during the period of the gallery’s collaboration with The Slovene-Croatian Educational and Cultural Association. |
