The goal of this thesis is to answer the question of whether Slovenian teachers were also the first Slovenian feminists. In the thesis I explained some relevant terminology, among which I specifically focused on illustrating early 20th century feminism to establish the criteria for my final verdict. I researched the social and economic standing of female teachers in late 19th and early 20th century and their access to higher education. I studied their activity outside of mandatory schoolwork, such as their membership and cooperation with various teaching organizations, their contribution to teachers' magazines and newspapers, as well as their membership in women's societies (with specific focus on The Society of Female Slovenian Teachers). I described the teachers' fight for their rights – both as teachers and as women – where I mostly focused on their right to vote, equal pay and the abolishion of celibacy (which was mandatory for female teachers). Finally, I highlighted some of the more prominent representatives that were especially active in the women's rights movement. |
