This diploma thesis comprises a theoretical part and a comparison between the literary text The Snow Queen by Hans Christian Andersen (first published in Danish in 1835, Slovene translation by Silvana Orel Kos) and the Disney movie Frozen (directed by Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee). The movie Frozen was inspired by Andersen's tale and was based on the motifs found in his story. The theoretical part presents the literary genre, i.e. young adult fiction. It defines a fairy tale, provides descriptions of different types of fairy tales (folk, classic, literary and modern) and describes how a fairy tale impacts a child. The second part focuses on the concepts of trivialisation and innovation by American professor Jack Zipes, known for his sociological approach to fairy tales. This part also presents the feminist theory of American scientist Marie Tatar, and the Walt Disney Corporation, which made many movies in the 90s based on remakes of famous fairy tales. The empirical part researches the changes that occur in the transition from a literary narrative to movie animation and also includes a comparison of the main female protagonists in Hans Christian Andersen’s The Snow Queen as well as the movie Frozen. The comparison is presented in tables. |
