Digitalised Slovene manuscripts can be found on three wikis: photographs or scans on Wikimedia Commons, transcripts on Wikisource and encyclopaedic descriptions on Wikipedia. Free access and use of manuscripts on wikis are guaranteed by Creative Commons licence, but restrictive domestic legislation (on copyright, cultural heritage and privacy) restricts publication. Photographic records of manuscripts on Wikimedia Commons are largely from the Digital Library of Slovenia, while the added value of placement on Wikimedia Commons are rapid access, maximum visibility, direct use for critical transcripts on Wikisource and for illustrating entries in Wikipedia, and international placement. Issues connected with editing and online publication of manuscripts are illustrated by the examples of the anonymous novel Pesem gora (Poem of the Mountains, 1943), degree dissertations at the Slovene Studies Department, the Collected Work of Alojz Gradnik, the correspondence between Boris Pahor and Marija Žagar, and variants of Prešeren's poems. |
