Researches based on self-report of risk factors or morbidity are useful in public health, mainly because they have low cost and are easy to collect. However, the accuracy of the data collected is important for the internal validity of the study. The aim of this study was to evaluate the agreement between selfreport gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and the medical record through the pregnancy card (gold standard). The agreement was measured by sensibility, specificity, accuracy, Kappa statistic and 95% confidence intervals (95%CIs). From July to December, 2007 all women that delivered in three of the hospitals of Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil, were visited immediately post partum. A total of 1,047 women were interviewed: 872 had the pregnancy card and 869 pursued the register of glycemia. The mean age was 26.7. Prevalence of GDM according to gold standard was 4.3% (95%CI 3.0-5.8) and according to self report 4.0% (95%CI 2.8-5.5). Sensibility of self-reported DMG was 72.9% (95%CI 55.9-86.2), specificity 99% (95%CI 98.1-99.6), accuracy 97.9% (95%CI 96.7-98.7), and Kappa 74,0%. For this population, self-reported GDM is valid information and can be used in population-based studies.
