Popis: The objective of this study was to determine the effects of different antioxidants on the seminal characteristics of White Plymouth Rock roosters from the 53rd to the 72nd week of age. Were conducted three experiments: experiment I (200 mg of vitamin E/kg/feed), experiment II (0.4 mg of selenium/kg/feed) and experiment III (6 mg of canthaxanthin/kg/feed). A total of 32 roosters were selected, distributed in a completely randomized design, with 16 replicates per treatment. Two treatments were used: negative control diet and supplemented with the antioxidant additive. The diets were isonutritivas, being allowed access, ad libitum, water and feed. The experimental phase was divided into 5 periods of 28 days. The parameters evaluated were: body weight, feed intake, lipid peroxidation (TBARS) and fatty acid profile (measured at the end of the periods). The volume seminal, motility, vigor, morphological changes, pH and sperm concentration (measured twice a year) were also determined. The data were submitted to analysis of variance through the program SAS (2011), considering statistically different at the level of 5% of significance. The vitamin E increased feed intake (P0.05). The roosters supplemented with vitamin E presented lower seminal volume in the period V (P=0.0295). Motility and spermatic vigor increased significantly with inclusion of vitamin E from period II (P0.05). The addition of vitamin E improved the spermatic concentration in the last two analyzed periods, (P=0.0001) and (P=0.0038), period IV and period V, respectively, comprising the interval between 65th and 72nd week of age. The total morphological defects (P= 0.0589) were not minimized with the addition of vitamin E. Vitamin E decreased lipid peroxidation (TBARS), modifying the fatty acid profile of semen (P0.05). The motility and spermatic vigor were increased with the inclusion of selenium in periods II, III and IV, comprising the interval between the 57th and 68th week of age (P0.05). The roosters presented lower body weight in the last period by inclusion of canthaxanthin (P0.05). There were significant changes in the fatty acid profile with the addition of canthaxanthin (P0,05).
