The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance and physiological responses of Piau naturalized pigs submitted to thermoneutrality (22?C) and high ambient temperature (30?C) conditions..The experiment was conducted at the Pig Breeding Teaching, Research and Extension Unit of the Federal University of Vi?osa (UFV). Twenty eight pigs (21 castrated males and 7 females) with an average age of 162 days and initial live weight of 64.4 ? 1.9 kg were used. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design and the animal was considered the experimental unit. The treatments consisted of two ambient temperatures: 22?C and 30?C. We used 10 males and 4 females for the 30?C condition, and 11 males and 3 females for the 22?C condition. The animals were housed in individual suspended pens. The experiment lasted 21 days, consisting of an adaptation step of seven days at 24?C (day -7 to -1); and 14-day experimental stage subdivided into, (1 to 7 days) and (8 to 14 days). Feed intake and weight gain were evaluated weekly. The respiratory rate, skin temperatures (neck, back and flank) and rectal temperature of each animal were measured on days -4, -2, 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 and 13 at 15:00 hours. At the end of the experimental stage, the fat thickness and the loin eye area of the animals were evaluated. The variables studied were analyzed using the general linear and mixed SAS software models. The animals submitted to the high ambient temperature condition had lower feed intake (2043 vs. 2399 g / d) and daily weight gain (443 vs. 565 g / d) when compared to the animals kept in thermoneutrality. Room temperature did not affect feed conversion (4.7 g / g). Regardless of the experimental day, the high ambient temperature resulted in increased neck temperature (+ 2.3oC), back (+ 2.3oC) flank (+2.2oC) and increased respiratory rate (+27 mov / min.). Rectal temperature was not affected by ambient temperature (P>0.05). According to the results, despite the negative effects on productive performance, Piau pigs are efficient in maintaining homeothermia in high ambient temperature conditions.
