Popis: Orientador: Zundir Jose Buzzi Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal do Parana. Setor de Ciencias Biologicas Abstract: The diets used were Ipomoea batatas and I. purpurea, collected at the metropolitan area of Curitiba. The experiments were carried out in a biometer incubator at the Entomology Laboratory of the Federal University of Paraná. The environmental conditions of the incubator were kept at controlled temperature (25 ± 2°C), 14 hours of photoperiod, and 80 ± 5% relative humidity. There was no influence of any diet on the lenght of the ovoposition and on the size of the eggs. The peak of ovoposition happened during the first weeks of life for both diets. The number of eggs on each lay varied from 1 to 8. One egg per lay predominated under I. batatas diet while groups of two eggs were more frequent when females were fed with I. purpurea. The incubation varied from 3 to 15 days, but 7 days was the most frequent in both diets. The larval stage of B. impressa passed through five instars, and took 21.0 and 18.3 days to be completed for I. batatas and I. pururea diets, respectively. The first four instars had similar average lenght of 4.2 and 3.7 days while the last instar took 8.9 and 7.0 days for the diets I. batatas and I. purpurea, respectively. The ratio male/female was approximately 0.4, independently of the diet. Females fed with I. batatas laid an average of 224.9 eggs in 10 weeks, and those fed with I. purpurea laid an average of 253,45 eggs in 9 weeks. The biological life cycle of B. impressa was 80.78 days with the I. batatas diet, and 134.85 days with the I. purpurea diet, respectively.
