Popis: Esta dissertação tem como objetivo, a partir da visão de literatura como uma possível ferramenta de crítica à sociedade (BOOKER, 1994a), perceber como The hunger games contesta o mundo contemporâneo. Para tanto, investigar-se-á quais as semelhanças entre o mundo do romance e o contexto histórico de sua publicação. Lançado em 2008, The hunger games, escrito pela autora estadunidense Suzanne Collins, traz temáticas comuns às discussões sobre o controle e domínio ideológico da sociedade capitalista do século XXI também presentes no subgênero distopia. Esta pesquisa entende por distopia as ficções influenciadas por textos utópicos em que a sociedade apresentada é radicalmente pior que a do autor e que buscam alertar o leitor sobre problemas do presente (BOOKER, 1994b; SUVIN, 2015). A partir do entendimento de que as temáticas das distopias variam de acordo com a conjuntura de seu tempo, é necessário compreender: quais as temáticas comuns às distopias e quais mudanças de abordagem ocorreram no gênero; como The hunger games discute os temas comuns à tradição distópica e como os ressignificou; por fim qual o paralelo entre o romance e a sociedade ocidental do início do século XXI. A pesquisa baseou-se nos estudos do filósofo Žižek e suas influências marxistas modernas para compreender a sociedade pós 11 de setembro. Para entender as relações entre literatura e sociedade, levou-se em consideração os estudos teóricos sobre distopias de Booker (1994a, 1994b), Gottlieb (2001) e Suvin (2015). Por fim, utilizou-se de parte da fortuna crítica de The hunger games – Averill (2013), Barbosa (2017), Gresh (2012) e Olthouse (2013) – como aporte para analisar as temáticas abordadas no romance. Percebe-se que The hunger games critica a espetacularização da realidade e as relações de poder presentes na sociedade. Além disso o romance sugere um comportamento baseado no cuidado e na solidariedade pelo próximo como possibilidade de superar os problemas denunciados na narrativa. This dissertation aims, from the point of view that literature is a possible tool for denouncing society problems (BOOKER, 1994a), to understand how The hunger games criticizes the contemporary world, and, in order to do that, it intends to investigate the similarities between the world of the novel and the historical context of its publication. The Hunger Games (COLLINS, 2008) alludes to common to the discussions on the control and ideological domination of capitalist society of the 21st century and to dystopian fiction. This work understands dystopia as fictions influenced by utopian texts in which the presented society is radically worse than the one of the authors and that seek to alert the reader about problems of present. Based on the understanding that the dystopian themes change according to their time, it is important to understand: which themes are usually present in dystopias and what changes occurred in their approach through time; how the novel discusses the motif of dystopic literature and how the it resignify the themes; finally a parallel between the novel and the western society of the beginning of the 21st century is made. The research used the studies of the philosopher Žižek and his modern Marxist influences to understand post-9/11 society. In order to understand the relations between literature and society, the theoretical studies on dystopias of Booker (1994a, 1994b), Gottlieb (2001) and Suvin (2015) were examined. Finally, the studies of Averill (2013), Barbosa (2017), Gresh (2012) and Olthouse (2013) were used to analyze the subjects discussed in the novel. It is noticed that The hunger games criticizes the spectacularization of the reality and the relations of power present in the society. In addition, the novel suggests a behavior based on care and solidarity for the neighbour as a possibility to overcome these problems.
