Pesquisa do Estado do Amazonas This dissertation seeks to answer the following question: can the trajectory of a missionary help us understand some of the historical processes that took place in the Amazon between the 19th and 20th centuries? Our historical subject is Clinton Benjamin Thomas (1930-2007), a native of Williamsport, Pennsylvania, and a missionary in the northern region of Brazil between the 1950s-1990s. Following your trajectory, we contextualize the Protestant history in Brazil, especially the insertion in the Amazon, when the first missionaries crossed the course of the Amazon River between Bel??m-Manaus, starting the first churches and paving the way for the current evangelical growth in the North Region. We also bring the arrival of the Restoration Movement to Brazil, through the Churches of Christ, through which Clinton and Phyllis Thomas emigrated to Brazil in 1956, dedicating themselves to missionary service in Bel??m and Macap??. Finally, we privilege his move to the interior of the Amazon, in small Urucar??, in 1965, where he founded the first Protestant church in the city of Urucar??, in the Lower Amazon region, at a time when the Catholic Church is restructuring itself to to fill the voids of Amazonian Catholicism, discussing emblematic events of the first two years of missionary activity in the interior of the Amazon. To understand these and other historical events that took place in what is known as the present time, this research dialogues with the memories and narratives involved in the trajectory of Clinton Thomas; so, we seek to question the official memory built about the Church of Christ and take advantage of the possibilities of the Oral History methodology, which allows the registration of the process of constrution of memories or shared memories through interviews with subjects who participated or witnessed in these historical events. Taking as a clipping the first years of Clinton Thomas' performance in the Amazon city, our choice for the study of memory and oral sources elucidates the important contribution that oral history offers to the understanding of the processes involving Protestantism in the interior of the Amazon, through subjects who were participants in the foundation and growth of non-Catholic Christianity in the region, as well as the transformations that took place in the region at that moment in the 20th century. Esta disserta????o busca responder a seguinte quest??o: a trajet??ria de um mission??rio pode nos ajudar a compreender alguns dos processos hist??ricos ocorridos na Amaz??nia entre os s??culos XIX e XX? Nosso sujeito hist??rico ?? Clinton Benjamin Thomas (1930-2007), natural de Williamsport, Pensilv??nia, e mission??rio na regi??o Norte do Brasil entre as d??cadas de 1950-1990. Acompanhando sua trajet??ria, contextualizamos a hist??ria protestante no Brasil, especialmente a inser????o na Amaz??nia, quando os primeiros mission??rios tomam o percurso do rio Amazonas entre Bel??m-Manaus iniciando as primeiras igrejas e abrindo o caminho para o atual crescimento evang??lico na regi??o Norte. Tamb??m trazemos a chegada do Movimento de Restaura????o ao Brasil, atrav??s das Igrejas de Cristo, atrav??s das quais Clinton e Phyllis Thomas migram para o Brasil em 1956, dedicando-se ao servi??o mission??rio em Bel??m e Macap??. Por fim, privilegiamos sua mudan??a para o interior do Amazonas, na pequena Urucar??, no ano de 1965, onde fundam a primeira igreja protestante na cidade de Urucar??, na regi??o do Baixo Amazonas, em um momento em que a Igreja Cat??lica est?? se reestruturando para preencher os vazios do catolicismo amaz??nico, discutindo acontecimentos emblem??ticos dos primeiros anos da atua????o mission??ria no interior do Amazonas. Para compreender esses e outros eventos hist??ricos ocorridos no chamado tempo presente, esta pesquisa dialoga com as mem??rias e narrativas envolvidas na trajet??ria de Clinton Thomas; assim, buscamos questionar a mem??ria oficial constru??da a respeito da Igreja de Cristo e aproveitar as possibilidades da metodologia da Hist??ria Oral, a qual permite o registro do processo de constru????o de mem??rias ou mem??rias compartilhadas atrav??s de entrevistas com sujeitos que participaram ou testemunharam tais eventos hist??ricos. Tomando como recorte os primeiros anos da atua????o de Clinton Thomas na cidade amazonense, nossa escolha pelo estudo da mem??ria e fontes orais elucida a importante contribui????o que a hist??ria oral oferece ?? compreens??o dos processos envolvendo o protestantismo no interior do Amazonas, atrav??s de sujeitos que foram participantes da funda????o e crescimento do cristianismo n??o cat??lico na regi??o, bem como das transforma????es encetadas na regi??o naquele momento do s??culo XX.
