The sweet potato, Ipomoea batatas (Solanales: Convolvulaceae), is a food of great importance in the world. However, the expansion of I. batatas production areas can result in an increase in the population of pests and cause damage and economic losses. The objective of the work was to identify the preference for oviposition, measure the intensity of attack and characterize morphologically and physiologically the genotypes of I. batatas resistant and susceptible to Bedellia somnulentella (Lepidoptera: Bedelliidae). Eleven genotypes of I. batatas were used for the experiments. Morphological characters that may be involved in the resistance process to B. somnulentella, such as the number of leafs trichomes, leaf area consumed and leaf morphology were analyzed in the eleven I. batatas genotypes. The I. batatas genotypes showed different degrees of resistance to B. somnulentella, the UFMG 3 genotype was highly susceptible, UFVJM 18, 526 and Brazl?ndia Branca susceptible and the others were less susceptible to B. somnulentella for oviposition. The leaf area consumed from the UFVJM 1, 4, 18 and Rubssol genotypes were the largest, followed by those from UFVJM 2, 3, 291, 526 and Brazl?ndia Branca. The resistance or susceptibility to B. somnulentella was not related to the density of leaf trichomes. Raised, sagittal and deltoid leaves obtained high preference for B. somnulentella. Genotypes of I. batatas attacked by B. somnulentella showed changes in the initial fluorescence of chlorophyll a (F0), there was an increase in (Fm) and a negative correlation between Fm/F0, showing photosynthetic stress in plants.
