The aim of the thesis is to analyse the X-ray images of fetlock region in selected racing breeds - French trotters (n=68) and Thoroughbreds (n=112). 180 Radiographies of 2018 were collected and a total of 960 images were reviewed. Research inspected horses’ age, breed, number of participated races and their influence to radiological findings in the fetlock region. So far, no investigation was done in Lithuania towards X-ray analysis of fetlock in racing French trotters and Thoroughbreds. Majority of analysed images (69%) contained some pathological findings: Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) (18%), enthesophytes (8%), osteophytes (8%), fractures (18%), periostitis (8%) and sesamoiditis (13%). The causation of age and pathological findings was not found as the same diseases were seen in different age groups, p>0,05. Majority of horses that didn’t have pathological findings in fetlock region were between 5 to 7 years old (36%). Degenerative type diseases were mostly seen in young horses between 2 to 4 years (33%), fractures in middle aged horses from 5 to 7 years old (22%) and inflammatory type diseases in population ≥8 years old (27%). Regarding the breed, French trotters had more degenerative type diseases (35,3%) while Thoroughbreds had more fractures (26,8%). For all the horses most common area of injury was the third metacarpophalangeal bone of the front right leg. This was a statistically significant finding, p0,05. |
