Popis: Author: Deimantė Grigaliūnaitė Thesis: \"Umbilical cord vein catheterization frequency, contingent and patient survival in Neonatal intensive care unit\". Objective: To determine umbilical vein catheterization frequency, contingent, length of catheter use, catheter malposition and survival of the newborns who underwent this procedure at LUHSH KC Neonatology Clinic Neonatal intensive care unit. Research tasks: 1. To evaluate the umbilical vein catheterization frequency in 2013 - 2014 year. 2. To determine newborn contingent (sex, gestational age, birth weight), who underwent umbilical vein catheterization in 2013 - 2014 year. 3. Examine the frequency of the correct catheter positioning and duration of the catheterization. 4. Assess the survival of the newborns who underwent umbilical vein catheterization. Methodology: We performed a retrospective study of 138 infants, who underwent umbilical vein catheterization in 2013 - 2014 year. The data were collected from the medical records. Umbilical venous catheter position was controlled by thoraco - abdominal X - rays. Newborns were divided into groups according to gestational age and birth weight. The adequate tip position of the umbilical venous catheter was considered at the thoracic 9-10 vertebra, above the aperture, on the inferior vena cava and right atrium connection visible on X - rays. Catheterization time was calculated according to medical records data and X-rays database. Statistical analysis was performed by using the statistical program MS Office Excel 2016 and SPSS version 20.0. Selected statistical confidence level of p < 0.05. Results: 1. Umbilical vein catheterization was assessed in 16.53 % (n=138) neonates of all newborns hospitalized at Neonatal intensive care unit. 2. The most commonly catheterization was performed for boys, but it was not a significant distribution between the sexes. Prevailed preterm and especially low birth weight infants. 3. The correct position of the catheter was found in 65.2 % of the patients: 23,2% inserted correctly from the first time and 42% after the adjustment. Catheterization time was short, the average duration - 2.68 ± 2,42 d. 4. Newborns, who had umbilical vein catheterized, survived 94.9 % (n=131). All newborn babies who do not survive were premature.
