The author continues the story about the precursors of the reforms of Peter the Great. One of them was Fyodor Rtishchev, who belonged to the Court of Tsar Alexey Mikhailivich. He was one of the most prominent figures in the Moscow Rus (ancient for Russia) in the 17th century. He had found two hospitals, one of which was built specially for the soldiers who had been wounded during the Polish campaign. He became the first philanthropist in Russia. Another prominent state figure of the Moscow Rus in the 17th century was A.L. Ordin-Nashchokin Together with him Rtishchev spoke out the idea of instability of the external successes if they were not based on the development of the internal state policy. He also spoke about little importance of the economic success in the absence of the main condition for existence of the harmonious community, built up on the basis of justice, and 'enlightened religious-moral sense'. He founded the Andreevsky monastery in Moscow and invited there theologians from Belorussian and Malorussian (ancient for Ukraine) monasteries for the preparation and comparison of the new Bible translations. He found the educational circle 'Rtishchev's brotherhood' and organized teaching on grammar, philosophy, and Greek and Latin languages for the young people from the Moscow noble families. The author, who has done very much for the restoration of the Andreevsky monastery, and handing it to the Russian Orthodox Church and to those departments of the Russian Academy of Sciences, which do the research work of Russian spiritual culture, considers symbolical that the new building for the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences is situated very close to that center of humanitarian science, the first one in Russia. |
