Popis: Proceedings of the 1996 Command and Control Research and Technology Symposium: Command and Control in the Information Age This paper summarizes the results of an investigation made into the use of SmartNet, a global distributed computing environment scheduling tool, with the Joint Maritime Command Information System (JMCIS). It was found that SmartNet could.significantly benefit JMCIS operations through the non-invasive dynamic scheduling o f segment execution in the JMCIS network. Dynamic segment scheduling is defined here to be the process of determining at runtime the best CPU in the LAN for execution of a segment or part of a segment. Results of experiments in scheduling segments on a small ship JMCIS configuration as well as results of a statistical analysis of scheduling in a large ship configuration are also presented. SmartNet was shown to utilize the CPU power in a JMCIS network more efficiently than current, non-distributed, methods. The extra computing capacity thus obtained can be utilized. either to increase the number and complexity of tasks that a single operator may do at one console or reduce the overall number or power of CPUs in the LAN.
