After the restoration of independence, interwar Lithuania paid a lot of attention to science and education. Yet, in a state weakened by the First World War and the struggles for independence, there was a shortage of both schools and teachers ready to work in them. Realizing this, priest Motiejus Gustaitis decides to actively participate in the Catholic Action, organizes the work of the schools of the Žiburys Society. Priest Gustaitis was born in tsarist-occupied Lithuania but grew up in a Catholic and nationally conscious environment, studied in Marijampolė Gymnasium and the Seinai Seminary of Priests filled with the spirit of Lithuanianness. He followed these values himself and educated his disciples on the same values. A particularly striking stage of his life was while he was the principal at Lazdijai Žiburys Gymnasium. |
