Popis: Šiauliai “Aušra” Museum has been collecting archaeological material since its establishment in 1923. A little bit later the first archaeological expeditions lead by Balys Tarvydas were organized. Even 8 of 10 excavated archaeological monuments in 1932–1937 were found in the territory of former Þiemgala. During the war and postwar years the archaeological investigations stopped. During the period of 1969 and 1982 the Museum did not organize any archaeological expedition. And only in 1982 the archaeological investigations were resumed. A new period of archaeological investigations began in 1989 when a Department of Archaeology was established. Birutë Salatkienë was designated as its head. Since then bigger or smaller archaeological expeditions have been organized. During the eight decades of “Aušra” Museum’s existence its archaeologists arranged more than 30 archaeological expeditions in northern part of Mid-Lithuania, investigated settlements and burial grounds of Iron Age and late old graveyards, manor places and old towns. The material found was added to the Department’s of Archaeology funds. It is widely used in scientific investigations.
