Popis: The results of the technological analysis of the Small Lithuanian Seal of Sigismund I the Old, King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania, are presented. The study has been carried out by means of optical microscopy in reflected and transmitted light (Olympus SZX10, Dino-lite AM4515T8) and X-ray fluorescence analysis (M1-Mistral Bruker). It has been found that the intense red samples collected from the seal have a heterogeneous structure. The seal is colored with a homogeneous, finely ground pigment, probably cinnabar or vermillion dye. The skippet of the seal has a whitish tint, most likely due to the addition of white lead. The use of these pigments indicates the high status of the owner of the seal, as the cinnabar was expensive and the skippets often either were unpainted or contained chalk. The traces analysis has revealed that the dent in the skippet had initially been cut for the small crown seal, but later on the diameter of the cavity was changed for the small Lithuanian seal. This clearly shows how closely the two chancelleries, the Polish and the Lithuanian ones, were linked, despite their formally independent status.
