Popis: This article provides an overview of libraries, reading rooms and book ownership marks in Šiauliai of independent Lithuania (1918–1940). From the beginning of the 20th century until the thirties, as in the whole of Lithuania, Šiauliai libraries were still called the bookshops. During the interwar period the first public library in Šiauliai was established in “Skalsa” canteen. In 1918, Stasys Brašiškis became the head of it. In 1920, the Central bookshop (Public Library) was opened in Šiauliai. With the help of variety of sources and archival material it was partially possible to restore and reconstruct the libraries and reading rooms of some of the lesser-known Šiauliai state and public organizations and societies of the inter-war period, their development, and using the book ownership marks to identify the nature and content of the funds. For the first time here is presented so far unpublished information and little-known facts about the libraries and reading rooms of Šiauliai state and public organizations and societies of the inter-war period and the book ownership marks: book entries, stamps, book plates, super book plates and stickers.
