Popis: The new stage in Lithuanian-Polish relations that began in the 1970s and 1980s was a result of global political transformations and changing times. With the ascendancy, in the Lithuanian diaspora, of the World Lithuanian Community; the election of a Polish pope; and the emergence of the Solidarity movement in Poland, the feeling became palpable that liberation from the Soviet empire might become a reality in the not-too-distant future and that it was time therefore to return seriously to the topic of future relations between the states of Lithuania and Poland. The policy of the World Lithuanian Community to engage with only those Polish organizations that recognized the territorial status quo paved the way for entering into direct contact with persons in Poland and with underground organizations.
