Popis: During 2015, more than one million migrants and refugees arrived in Germany.Syrians were the largest group of first time asylum applicants, with numbers increasing each month throughout the year. The peak figures were seen inNovember, when more than 30,000 applications were recorded. On 9th January 2016, Ole Schröder, Parliamentary State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of the Interior (BMI), referred to a possible one million asylum-seekers coming to Europe during the coming year, mostly through Turkey. Frank Jürgen Weise, Head of the Federal Office for Migration andRefugees (BAMF), estimated thataround half that number, 500,000 refugees, would arrive in Germany. This briefing presented the available official data and explained some of the differences between the data types which had led to confusion in the official discourse, in media reporting and in academic commentary.
