Popis: The article is devoted to the presentation of a leitmotif in the post-Marxist vision of society, which is as follows: “society” is seen as a unitary and intelligible object which grounds its own partial processes “in an impossibility”. Basically, the impossibility of society means that no he-gemonic force is able to establish a universal and non-antagonistic social space for all social sectors. The article reflects this theme in the context of E. Laclau’s works as well as E. Laclau and C. Mouffe’s Hegemony and Socialist Strategy. At the same time it reveals the Lacanian, structuralist and post-structuralist roots of the thesis about impossibility of society. The author refers to the main categories of the post-Marxist thought, namely: discourse, ideology, antagonism, hegemony, particularity and universality. He suggests that in the context of Laclau’s thesis about impossibility of social totality we are able to question the authorial identity of “Laclau and Mouffe”. Zeszyty Naukowe TDUJ
