This thesis focuses on origination and development of Joe Hloucha's Art Collection, a significant Czech collector of non-European art of the first half of 20th century. Despite of its great significance, African Art still does not stand in the centre of interest of the Czech art-historians. One of the main objectives of this thesis is to remind a personality who almost had been forgotten and to disclose the situation of the art market in Prague. The attention is further applied to the attempt of creating the structure of Joe Hloucha's collector activities relating to the territory of West Africa. On the basis of sources I consequently create the very first list of all works of art that come from the chosen geographic territory either bought or differently acquired into the collections of the Náprstek Museum of Asian, African and American Cultures. I tried to emphasize the priority function of some chosen artifacts which is important for the Africans. The last chapter is dedicated to the problematic destiny of the collection. |
