| Popis: | The bachelor?s thesis deals with Jaroslav Vrchlický?s translations of French poetry. No monograph has been published on the subject as yet, there exist only a limited number of studies focusing on the analysis of individual poetic texts. This paper offers a chronological overview of Vrchlický?s translations and reactions in contemporary periodicals. We have used the incipient digitalized card index available on the internet site of the Institute of Czech Literature AS CR as a source of information. The importance of Vrchlický?s translations is indisputable as he was the first to introduce the Czech public to the work of contemporary as well as older French poets. Criticism was aware of this. However, it reproached Vrchlický for keeping the form too strictly to the detriment of content in his renderings. A further controversial issue was the impact of French poetry on the development of Czech poetry. |
