Species of Mytilus carry two mitochondrial genomes, one transmitted through the egg (F) and the other through the sperm (M). In a previous paper we showed that a specific part of the M genome binds with proteins originating from male gonadal extracts and proposed that this binding protects M carrying mitochondria from a destruction mechanism that occurs in the male gonad. Here we show that a similar binding with the homologous part of the F genome is less specific and unstable, and apparently offers no protection of F carrying mitochondria. © 2016 Elsevier Inc. |
