Kurz and Salvadori (2001) mention more than ten economists or mathematicians who helped Sraffa during the long gestation period of his Production of Commodities by Means of Commodities. A lot of information is available on all of them, except in case of a certain Carlo Brunner. My paper wants to fill this gap. I describe Brunner’s background, his Trieste connection, his studies at the London School of Economics, the move to Cambridge, the internment of many Italians (including Brunner and Sraffa) in 1940 on the Isle of Man, the many meetings between Brunner and Sraffa from 1941 onward, Brunner’s letters in the Financial Times, and his privileged contacts with Sraffa on Production of Commodities by Means of Commodities. |
