There is a harmony between the gingiva, alveolar bone, oral muscles, tongue, lips and cheeks in the mouth which can be disrupted due to abnormal oral habits that may cause anomalies in the occlusions. Many studies have proved that tongue thrusting plays a significant role in theetiology of some orofacial deformities. We report the case of a 34-year-old man with a history of endodontic treatment in tooth number 11 a year ago. The patient developed a tongue thrusting habit after endodontic treatment that did not exist before. Comparing the radiographs taken before and 1 year after endodontic treatment, extreme vertical and horizontal alveolar bone destructions were observed in the both maxillary and mandibular anterior teeth area. In this case report, we describe how abnormal oral habits can cause aggressive bone destruction in a very short time. It is important to raise awareness against malocclusions and alveolar bone losses that may occur due to poor oral habits such as tongue thrusting and their treatment approaches to dentists and the public. |
