Popis: Začetek diplomskega dela nas popelje od začetkov rehabilitacijskega gibanja do danes. Predstavimo različna stališča do rehabilitacije v zaporih in kakšne oblike rehabilitacije poznamo. In the beginning of this paper we take a tour from the beginning of rehabilitation movement until present day. Different points of view regarding rehabilitation of inmates and different rehabilitation methods are discussed, followed by a short presentation of Slovenian prisons and rehabilitation methods currently used there. Next chapter describes a bond between human and animal and use of animals for rehabilitation purposes in ancient times, as well as possibilities of using animals in prison rehabilitation. This is followed by a definition of animal-assisted therapy, animal-assisted activities and presentation of other similar programs occurring in prisons. Inmates can be in contact with an animal while talking to an expert, or they can be in permanent interaction with animals, take care of them and train them for various purposes. Our interest is in the use of animals in Slovenia for therapeutic purposes and whether they are used in prisons as means of rehabilitation. While use of animals for therapeutic purposes in Slovenia is increasing, similar therapies in prisons do not exist, mainly because of overcrowded correctional facilities and lack of finance. Ministry of justice has informed us that therapeutic work with dogs from animal shelter is being established in Correctional facility Dob. Dogs will be provided by Society for animal protection Posavje. Inmates are going to train dogs until they are ready for adoption. In the research part of this paper we were trying to determine whether following statements are valid: • rehabilitation significantly affects reintegration of inmates in their community after they have served their sentences, • animals and their positive psychosocial effects affect the rehabilitation of inmates and affect the rate of recidivism, • society Ambasadorji nasmeha is ready to perform animal-assisted therapy in prisons and • Department for rehabilitation in The Prison Administration of the Republic of Slovenia is willing to add animal assistance in rehabilitation. On the basis of analyzed literature and interviews with professionals we have confirmed all of aforementioned hypothesis. This is followed by a discussion of interviews and explanation of hypothesis.
