The diploma work discusses various rick factors that accompany modern textile and fashion industry. We live in times when bigger and bigger emphasis is on material goods, and people pay bigger and bigger attention to clothes. Thus the textile industry has expanded recently, and consequently, negative impacts can be observed in many areas. The purpose of this work is also to warn and enlighten people that they can decide to change their choices and spending habits in the fashion area, and thus influence the producers, fashion corporations, and demand from them different, higher standards regarding the human rights and environmental protection. In the diploma work, basic terminology of the textile industry is presented, as well as its impact on the environment and people. Due to fast development and bigger and bigger need for clothes, there are more and more sick people, pollution and environment destruction, as well as human rights violations. Fair trade is winning recognition in this area also in Slovenia. Its primary goal is to warn people that the trade should be fair for everybody and that everyone should be paid appropriately for their work. It strives to do away with exploitation and to show people that fair trade is possible. A big problem is also non-ecological cotton production as various pesticides destroy fertile soil, the land is being deforested and the lakes are disappearing. Pesticides stay in the harvested cotton that gets later in contact with workers in textile factories and then also with our skin, which can have negative effects on our health. We very seldom ask ourselves where the cotton shirt that we buy for abnormally low price comes from, what material it is made of and in what conditions it was produced. We have found out that people are sufficiently aware of the problems in fashion industry, but still not enough for bigger improvements to take place. Consumers themselves could commence most improvements in this area, beginning with the change of buying habits. |
