Podatki, pridobljeni z vprašalnikom, so bili statistično obdelani s programskim orodjem Microsoft Excel in Microsof Word. Rezultati. Suicides have reached horrific dimensions in Slovenia, although they differ from region to region. Despite the serious issue of suicide rate, Slovenia still hasn't developed a program for suicide prevention that already exists in some other countries. The purpose of the thesis is to present the suicide rate issue among people older than 65 years in the Podravje region and it’s comparison to other regions in Slovenia. One of our main objectives was to determine the cause why older people start to think about premature and conscious ending of their lives. Research methodology. A quantitative method was used. As an instrument for collecting data we used a questionnaire. Data from the questionnaire was statistically analyzed in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word programs. Results. We reached the conclusion that the suicide rate in Podravje region is higher than the Slovene average. One of our findings was also that quite a few individuals would commit suicide in the case of the incurable disease. Similar to other surveys, we also conclude that men are more likely to commit suicide than women. Conclusion. Nurses as important agents for suicide prevention have to establish empathic relationship with older people, especially with men, since they rarely visit the doctor and find it difficult to talk about their problems. They must spend more time with visually and hearing impaired people and those with chronic illness, since these individuals more often think about committing suicide.
