The Diploma thesis consists of the theoretical and empirical parts. The theoretical part first defines the heart as the most vital organ, cardiac emergencies, the laymen as the firs "rescuer" who has the knowledge of basic life support and is aware of the facts that he or she is obliged to help the person whose healt is at risk and is criminally liable for refusing help. Moreover, the thesis also describes the external automatic defibrillator, the importance of its functioning and public accessibility to it, and the knowledge of laymen on its use. The data included in the empirical part was obtained on the basis of a survey carried out among randomly selected laymen in the Pomurje region. The survey was carried in November 2011. It was anonymous and included 80 laymen. The descriptive method was used, and the survey results were analysed and interpreted in this Diploma thesis.
