For the past few decades, Slovenia is experiencing brain drain, a phenomenon referring to the growing emigration of young, skilled, and highly educated individuals, disappointed with the situation in their home country, who have found employment opportunity in neighbouring or more distant countries. What is called brain drain today has been known for centuries as emigration and Slovenia, as well as other countries (for example Austria) started to experience it already in 16th century. Person decides to emigrate from their country of political, personal or economic reasons, the latter being most prevalent. Some manage to improve their social and economic situation during their stay abroad while others are disappointed by their failure and return home. However, regardless of individual’s or family’s reasons for emigration, all emigrants deal with the same problems during their first years of living abroad, such as: lack of language skills, loneliness, facing a society’s prejudice against foreigners, cultural differences, and many more. By analysing seven novels by Slovene and foreign authors I will try to find out what problems are emigrants facing in a foreign country, what are the reasons for their emigration and the problem of return migration. Furthermore, I will compare emigration experience among children and adults and will try to find out whether Slovenes and foreign political emigrants have different emotional experiences of emigration. |
