V teoretičnem delu smo predstavili gibalne sposobnosti in telesne značilnosti otrok, gibalne kompetence predšolskih otrok, njihov razvoj, pomen in vpliv okolja na ustvarjanje le-teh ter pomembnost gibalno-izkušenjskega bogatega okolja. This graduation thesis titled The Role of Parents in the Development of Children's Motor Skills consists of two parts the theoretical and the empirical. The aim of our research was to establish the role of parents in the development of children’s motor skills. The theoretical part discusses children’s motor abilities and physical characteristics, the motor skills of pre-school children, the development and importance of these skills, the role of the environment in motor skills development and the importance of a motor experience-rich environment. The empirical part of the thesis comprises a survey conducted with a sample of 119 parents of 2-6 year olds using close-ended questionnaires. Having analysed the data gathered, we have come to the following conclusions. First, parents realise the importance of physical activity for their children, as such activity also enhances other areas of child development. Second, regardless of their age, the majority of parents engage with children in outdoor sports activities, most frequently in various ball games. Third, parents’ education and the nature of their work affect how often they participate in physical activities with their children, i.e. better educated parents and those in intellectual professions are more active. Fourth, parents enrol their children in organised sports if the children so wish however, very few prove to be actually involved in such programs. And last but not least, most parents are inactive while on summer holiday.
