The objective of this thesis was to examine the characteristics, aspects and perceptions of the hikikomori phenomenon (the social withdrawal of Japanese youth) that poses problems in scientific research. A comparative analysis has shown that this social phenomenon has no widely agreed common definition. There are two significant definitions, serving as a basis for numerous derivations that enable operational indications of the phenomenon in regard to individual researches. A discourse analysis of the phenomenon confirmed the important role of individual (media, public, scientific, and official) discourses in the conception and formation of the phenomenon's perception in expert circles and other public groups. A comparative analysis of existing methodological approaches led to the conclusion that qualitative methods prevail, while methodological research approaches meet with difficulties arising from the unavailability of the subject at issue. The examination of suggested theoretical interpretations of the hikikomori phenomenon revealed a domination of approaches that recognize social and economic circumstances, mainly structural changes in modern Japanese society, as fundamental reasons for a social retreat, supposedly also being a result of several mutually connected or even induced causes. The hypothesis of the cultural peculiarity of the hikikomori phenomenon has been confirmed. It is undoubtedly a culture-specific Japanese phenomenon on a formal level, while structurally similar phenomena in other societies should be pointed out as well.
