Translation is unavoidable in international journalism. We suggest that studying the translation of reported speech in journalistic translation offers an interesting viewpoint to the study of reported speech, as it increases the agency of the journalist by forcing them change the language of reporting and thus make decisions on how to express the content in another language. In this article we examine reported speech in the journalistic translation of the Finnish daily newspaper Helsingin Sanomat. We analyse data collected during the spring 2017 that consists of articles in Finnish dealing with the presidential elections in France, as well as of articles in French that we have been able to collect as being the sources mentioned in the articles in Finnish. An analysis of translation solutions using Andrew Chesterman’s classification shows evidence of literal translations, information changes and explicitness changes. |
