The baby-boomers in middle age - To work or to retire -research is part of a research project which the Social Insurance Institution of Finland started in the year 1998. The aim of this study is to research the middle-aged baby-boomers' present aspirations of their workcareer, health and perceptions of early exit and time of retirement. The frame of reference is the event based research model of Elder and Pellerin (1998). The aim is to notice and recognize the historical and social circumstances and influences that have occured during the boomers' life course. In this study the baby-boomers are defined as those birth cohorts which were born between the years 1945 and 1950. In the beginning of the study there is a chapter in which the concept of baby-boomers and the baby boom generation are defined. Chapter 2.2. includes a description of the life course of the generation. There is also a brief presentation of the baby-boomers in other parts of the world. The data used in this study were collected during May 1998 by the Statistics Finland. The Finnish Life Course Survey was a postal survey. The number of baby boomer respondents is 1429. Response rate was 58%. The research methods are frequency distributions, cross tables and logistic regression models. One third of the middle-aged baby-boomers don't have any vocational school qualification. Most of the men (60%) had worked over 30 years and. Among the women 46% had more than 30 years in employment. Half of the respondents have worked in one or two occupations. Three out of four respondents haven't planned extension studies. The most insecuring issue at working life seems to be the fear of the working tasks becoming more difficult. Most of the respondents' self rated health is good or moderate though 40% of respondents have a sickness of long duration. One third of the baby-boomers have often thought of the possibility to retire before the mandatory retirement age. It seems that men have slighty more frequently thoughts of early retirement. Three out of four respondents which are defined as tended to retire are interested in part time retirement. Among the men 67% would like to retire before 60 years of age and among the women the percentage is 60.
