Life Cycle Greenhouse Gases (GHG) emissions from biofuels can be significantly affected if the effect of indirect Land Use Change (iLUC) is considered, especially in the case of first generation biofuels. This study presents the theoretical concept of iLUC and its relationship with GHG emissions, the different models to quantify this effect and the disparity of results based on a literature review. Besides, a complete analysis of the actions carried out by the European Commission in order to include iLUC in the amending Directive 200928/EC is presented. Finally, the most updated results in case of biofuels consumption in Spain and the forthcoming developments in the application of more accurate models are presented. |
