Fang Bao, an orthodox Confucian of the Qing Dynasty(1644-1911), is generally considered as the founding father of the school of Tong Cheng, the most important and influential school of prose writing in China from the eighteenth century through the early years of the Republic. A distinguished prose writer and crictic, Fang Bao has received considerable attention in recent years. His works had greatly influenced the development of the ancient-style prose of the Qing dynasty . His outstanding achievement earned him an important position in the history of Chinese prose, while his literary theories had secured him a special place in the history of Chinese literary criticism.
