Dissertação de Mestrado em Dinâmicas Sociais, Riscos Naturais e Tecnológicos apresentada à Faculdade de Letras This research consolidates and records the analysis performed by the author, as a volunteer at the Center for Forest Fire Studies (CEIF), linked to the Association for the Development of Industrial Aerodynamics (ADAI), linked to the Department of Mechanical Engineering (DEM) of the Faculty of Science and Technology (FCT) - University of Coimbra (UC), between October 2016 and December 2017. Since 1987, CEIF has developed one of the most durable programs for measuring moisture content (MC) in fine forest fuels, whether within the EU or worldwide. The measurements are taken from the collection of samples in a forest area near the National School of Firefighters (ENB), near the Lousã Aerodrome, Coimbra District, Portugal. Six types of vegetation samples are collected at the place - living and dead, among four species that are characteristic of the mosaic that composes the portuguese forest. The heterogeneous set for the sampling is formed by the species Pinus pinaster (Pinheiro-bravo) and Eucalyptus globulus (Eucalyptus), and the shrub species of Calluna vulgaris (Urze) and Chamaespartium tridentatum (Carqueja). In the scope of the research promoted by CEIF, the choice of forest remnant around the Lousã aerodrome, as a sampling point, with reference geographic coordinates 40 °08'38''N 008 °14'41''W, altitude which varies between 190 and 200 meters above medium sea level, allows a number of logistical advantages to research, due to the proximity between the forest and the forest fire laboratory (LEIF) maintained by CEIF ( |
