Popis: There have been many project-based courses that utilize cross-disciplinary groups of engineering students and promote this to students based on the argument that they will work in such teams in their future professional practice. For civil engineers in professional practice, the reality is that they are more likely to work with architects and urban planning professionals, particularly if they specialize in structural or infrastructure engineering. Yet the opportunities for them to do this within the higher education setting are very limited. Such collaborations are made more complex by the fact that architects and planners operate from what some might call a different paradigm than engineering, and in some ways speak a different language. This paper examines the efforts to date to implement such cross-disciplinary collaborations in project-based courses at one institution, and discusses both the successes and the work still to do.
