Thesis (Masters by research(Health Sciences))--University of South Australia, 2022. Includes bibliographical references (pages 48-58) The complement of the mortality-to-incidence ratio (1-M/I) is used widely as a crude index of cancer survival, especially in parts of the world without the infrastructure and technology to undertake conventional survival calculations. Several studies have examined the validity of 1-M/I as a surrogate for 5-year survival. However, the validity of 1-M/I as a survival indicator is still questioned and may depend on circumstances and purpose. Here the validity and utility of 1-M/I for ranking survival across populations is explored, rather than as an absolute measure of survival. |
