Popis: The aim of this study was to assess community pharmacists' opinion about delivering generic drugs and to compare this opinion with a quantitative survey. Flemish pharmacies registered and specified all encountered problems with original and generic antibiotic and cardiovascular drugs during two weeks by means of validated forms. A self-administered questionnaire was used to assess the pharmacist's attitude toward generic drugs before and after the observation period. 397 pharmacies were selected out of the 2 645 Flemish pharmacies of the Belgacom list of November 2002. 109 pharmacies participated. On average there were 3.59% problems with delivering antibiotic and cardiovascular drugs. The main problems were "mistakes on the doctor' prescriptions" (47.41%) and "storage problems in the pharmacy" (41.20%). Significantly more problems were recorded with generic antibiotics (p < 0.001) and cardiovascular drugs (p < 0.001) in comparison with their corresponding original products. The storage of the various products was considered as the greatest obstacle for a good generic policy in the pharmacy. The pharmacists displayed a positive attitude toward substitution of a generic drug by another one. 1,5 years after the introduction of the reference reimbursement, community pharmacists experience significantly more problems with delivering generic antibiotic and cardiovascular drugs than with delivering their corresponding original drugs. Measures should be taken in the future to decrease this percentage of problems. ispartof: Tijdschrift voor Geneeskunde vol:61 issue:3 pages:169-178 status: published
