Of all manipulations to products in industry, planar motion is the most common. Planar actuators with low maintenance and operation costs and high flexibility are desired. In this paper, the design of an electrodynamic hovering planar actuator is described, starting from the previously designed 1 dimensional hovering actuator. Through simulation of typical configurations of this hovering actuator, and preliminary tests on simplified prototypes, a three phase three coil actuator was selected and a prototype was designed.
