In this paper we focus on the famous dialogue between Huizi and Zhuangzi concerning the question whether or not ren 人 (including the shengren 聖人) have qing 情. Most scholars read qing in this exchange as meaning “feelings” or “emotions.” In this paper, we take issue with this view and argue that such renditions are misleading. We demonstrate that, while Huizi perhaps understands qing as something like feelings or emotions, Zhuangzi insists that qing 情 means shifei 是非. For Zhuangzi, having qing entails making shifei judgments; having no qing means that shifei has no grip on those ren, for example the shengren, who have no qing. Hence, the expression wuqing 無情 should not be understood in terms of a “doctrine of non-emotion.” What one can claim in terms of wuqing is that Zhuangzi (following Laozi) advises us to lead a life that is characterized by mental tranquility, calmness, and stillness. We show that these “peaceful” characteristics are connected to wuwei 無為 in the Zhuangzi. ispartof: Dao vol:20 issue:1 pages:133-148 status: Published online |
