Popis: Platelet transfusions are essential in the management of selected patients with thrombocytopenia. Up to 65% are given to haematology patients and most are used in the elderly. In England over the 5 years following the financial year April 2006 to March 2007 (2006/ 2007) demand increased by 22%. This resulted in 2011/12 in the issue of 265,000 therapeutic doses at an annual cost of more than £60 million (£227.45 per dose). As the UK population is ageing with a predicted rise from 17% aged 65 years or over in 2010 to 23% in 2035, platelet transfusion to only those likely to benefit is imperative to limit cost.
