Medical documentation of 70 patients surgically treated at the Department o f Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in Zagreb, for trigeminal neuralgia, was retrospectively analyzed. In the majority of cases (65), neuralgia was idiopathic and in 5 cases symptomatic. Causes o f symptomatic neuralgia were: retained tooth roots (3), tumor (1) and multiple sclerosis (1). Women were by far more frequently affected by trigeminal neuralgia, mostly at the age between 61-70 years (p < 0.01). Pain lateralized to the right side was the most common (60%) (p < 0.01), The second and third branches of the trigeminal nerve were equally involved. A pain-free interval after neurectomy occurred between 12 and 26 months. Thirteen patients were reoperated on, one patient was operated on five times.
