In 2013 we continued a series of experiments with firing clay vessels by methods that may have been used in prehistory. The kiln we built in 2012 was destroyed during the very wet winter of 2012/2013, and during the summer we built it anew with certain structural changes that reduced the time of firing and the quantity of fuel. We observed certain deficiencies that we will try to eliminate in the next experiments. When the new kiln was fired we fired also vessels in a reduction atmosphere. Vessels were fired together with fuel in a pit 60 cm deep and 60 cm in diameter. On the bottom of the pit we placed tiles, over which we placed straw and dry branches. On this layer of fuel we placed five vessels that we then covered with sawdust, straw and brushwood. Due to unfavourable weather conditions we interrupted the experiment after 4 hours, when the temperature reached 480°C. Even though the vessels were not completely fired, their walls turned black on the surface and in the cross-section. Two vessels were damaged during firing, but in order to carry out a successful procedure and obtain proper results, it is necessary to repeat the experiment. |
