The article analyses different aspects of the common land system in rural mountain societies. The main objective of peasant communities is first identified as the search for social reproduction, rather than to reduce inequalities or simple social control. Later, based on an analysis of the factors favouring consensus, it explores the mechanisms of how the the common land system operated in the mountain economies of the southern La Rioja region. The formal and Informal rules and the influence of local power combined to provide the common land system with a huge capacity to adapt. Finally, the common land system continuing during the 19th century is presented as a result of the flexibility of its mechanisms and the acceptance of the local people. |
