Popis: In this paper, we analyze the incentives for graduates from engineering schools to work in R&D activities. First, we focus on the remuneration of R&D activities in private companies. The results suggest clearly a lower remuneration of R&D in comparison to other activities, all things being equal. Then, we test the hypothesis of a « taste for research ». According this hypothesis, engineers working in R&D activities are willing to accept lower earnings due to intrinsic benefits they get from their work. The results do not fully validate this hypothesis. Indeed, engineers involved in R&D activities have a greater dissatisfaction about the remuneration they receive, but also concerning many aspects of their work. These results lead to question about the place of R&D within companies, in a knowledge society.
