Popis: The classification of expanding 2 :1 phyllosilicates includes as a criterion total layer charge. Identification has been largely based on expansion and collapse reactions which are thought to be charge related. Some clays from both soil and geologic environments have high charge interlayers characteristic of vermiculites (0.6 to 0.9 per half-unit cell) but with expansion properties similar to smectites (0.2 to 0.6 per half-unit cell). This aqueous expansion behavior is related to the distribution of the total charge between the octahedral and tetrahedral sheets. In particular, high charge clays exhibit expansion behavior characteristic of smectites if the tetrahedral charge is less than 50% of total charge. It is proposed that the classification of expanding 2 :1 phyllosilicates be based on both total layer charge and location of charge.
